Crossword Genius

Crawled up valley beneath small wood (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

grovelled

'crawled' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'up valley beneath small wood' is the wordplay.
'up' says the letters should be written in reverse (in down clue: letters go upwards).
'valley' becomes 'dell' (dell is a kind of valley).
'beneath' says to put letters next to each other (in a down clue, some letters go beneath others).
'small wood' becomes 'grove' (I've seen this in another clue).
'dell' in reverse letter order is 'lled'.
'lled' after 'grove' is 'GROVELLED'.

(Other definitions for grovelled that I've seen before include "Behaved humbly" , "Abased oneself" , "Crawled" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
