Curve, almost instant indication of circle? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

arctic

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'indication of circle?' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both man-made objects as well as being singular nouns.
Maybe they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'curve almost instant' is the wordplay.
'curve' becomes 'arc' (arc is a kind of curve).
'almost' means to remove the last letter (almost the whole word is kept).
'instant' becomes 'tick' (I've seen this before).
'tick' with its last letter removed is 'tic'.
'arc'+'tic'='ARCTIC'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for arctic that I've seen before include "Northern ocean" , "Area centred on the North Pole" , "The frozen north" , "It's cold at the top" , "Cold region in the northern hemisphere" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
