Crossword Genius

Deceive a wily fellow (3)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

fox

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'deceive' is the definition.
(I know that fox is a type of deceive)

'a wily fellow' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'fellow' could be 'f' (abbreviation - of a society etc.) and 'f' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'ox' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for fox that I've seen before include "Countryside carnivore" , "Baffle; mammal" , "Deceive; Reynard" , "earth-dweller" , "Nonplus" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
