I believe the answer is:
decal
'design' is the definition.
(I know that decal is a type of design)
'laced the other way' is the wordplay.
'the other way' shows that the letters should be reversed in order.
'laced' written backwards gives 'DECAL'.
(Another definition for decal that I've seen is " Transfer - laced (anag)".)
