Crossword Genius

Deters hundreds of female relations (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

daunts

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'deters' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are verbs in their -s form, I can't see how one could define the other.

'hundreds of female relations' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'hundreds' could be 'd' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'd' is present in the answer.
'relations' could be 'aunts' (aunt is a kind of relation) and 'aunts' is located in the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for daunts that I've seen before include "Frightens or discourages" , "intimidates" , "Cows" , "Makes afraid or discouraged" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish News.
