Crossword Genius

Device diminishing the writer? (6,9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

pencil sharpener

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'device' is the definition.
Both the answer and definition are singular nouns.
Maybe there's a link between them I don't understand?

'diminishing the writer?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'writer?' could be 'pencil' (I've seen this before) and 'pencil' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'sharpener' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for pencil sharpener that I've seen before include "Desk item" , "that makes lead go further" , "It's used to make a point" , "shaving device" , "something struggling writer might resort to" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
