Crossword Genius

Devon town house with no metal put up (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

honiton

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'devon town' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'house with no metal put up' is the wordplay.
'house' becomes 'ho' (abbreviation for house).
'with no metal' becomes 'notin' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'put up' says the letters should be written in reverse.
'notin' in reverse letter order is 'niton'.
'ho'+'niton'='HONITON'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for honiton that I've seen is " Devon town (lace)".)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
