Diplomat with strong desire to ditch the booze? (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

attache

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'diplomat' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'desire to ditch the booze?' is the wordplay.
'desire' becomes 'ache' (ache can mean a passionate desire for something).
'to' means one lot of letters go next to another (I've seen this in other clues).
'ditch the booze?' becomes 'att' (I can't explain this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'ache' after 'att' is 'ATTACHE'.

'with strong' is the link.
This may not be correct. Some or all of it may be part of another bit of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for attache that I've seen before include "Specialist on embassy staff" , "One on embassy staff" , "Embassy worker" , "That ace (anag.)" , "Diplomatic official" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
