I believe the answer is:

dresser

'does one' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't see how one could define the other.

'help actors for a change?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'change?' could be 'dress' (dressing is a kind of changing) and 'dress' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'er' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

(Other definitions for dresser that I've seen before include "One who treats wounds" , "Sideboard with open shelves" , "Person working in one theatre" , "Theatre assistant" , "Piece of dining-room furniture" .)

I've seen this clue in The Sun.
