Don't go for an adjournment (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

stay

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'don't go' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'an adjournment' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'an' could be 'a' and 'a' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'sty' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'for' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for stay that I've seen before include "Remain; detain" , "Supporting rope or wire" , "guy to > put off" , "Stick around" , "control" .)
