Don’t take, when you hand down to (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

leave

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'don't take' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'when you hand down to' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'when' could be 'e' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'e' is located in the answer.
'hand' could be 'l' (abbreviation for left, as in the left-hand side) and 'l' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'ave' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for leave that I've seen before include "Desert" , "Green light" , "taken by those on the way out" , "Pull out" , "Quit; permission" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
