'explorer' is the definition.
(Ferdinand Magellan is an example)

'dropped round royal row and took issue with an' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'royal' could be 'er' (abbreviation for Elizabeth Regina) and 'er' is found within the answer.
'row' could be 'din' (both can mean a loud disturbance) and 'din' is located in the answer.
'and' could be 'n' (common abbreviation for 'and') and 'n' is located in the answer.
'issue' could be 'mag' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'mag' is present in the answer.
'an' could be 'a' and 'a' is found within the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
