Crossword Genius

Easy to work with ship compositions (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

essays

'compositions' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'easy to work with ship' is the wordplay.
'to work' indicates anagramming the letters (letters worked into a new order).
'with' is an insertion indicator.
'ship' becomes 'SS' (prefix in ship names eg SS Great Britain).
'easy' is an anagram of 'eays'.
'eays' enclosing 'ss' is 'ESSAYS'.

(Other definitions for essays that I've seen before include "Short pieces of writing on a particular subject" , "Students' works" , "Literary compositions" , "Disquisitions" , "Compositions, articles" .)

I've seen this clue in The Mirror.
