Crossword Genius

Empty trash and steal from the pound (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

throb

'the pound' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'empty trash and steal' is the wordplay.
'empty' says to hollow out the word (remove centre letters).
'and' says to put letters next to each other.
'steal' becomes 'rob' (robbing is a kind of stealing).
'trash' with its middle removed is 'th'.
'th'+'rob'='THROB'

'from' acts as a link.

(Other definitions for throb that I've seen before include "Palpitate, quiver (with emotion)" , "Pulse" , "Sound of engines" , "Drum" , "Beat quickly from excitement etc" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
