bedraggled

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'engineer hauled clothing left in terrible shape' is the definition.
I can't judge whether this definition defines the answer.

'engineer hauled clothing left' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'left' could be 'l' (common abbreviation) and 'l' is located in the answer.
'hauled' could be 'dragged' ('drag' can be a synonym of 'haul') and 'dragged' is found within the leftover letters.
The remaining letters 'be' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
