Crossword Genius

Expectant desire for a flight East (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

hope

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'expectant desire' is the definition.
'hope' can be an answer for 'desire' (I've seen this before). I am not sure about the 'expectant' bit.

'a flight east' is the wordplay.
'a flight' becomes 'hop' (I can't explain this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'east' becomes 'e' (synonyms).
'hop'+'e'='HOPE'

'for' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for hope that I've seen before include "One who wrote about prisoner" , "combination of expectation and desire" , "Bob --, US comedian" , "The last thing in Pandora's Box" , "It alone stayed in Pandora's box" .)
