Crossword Genius

Expectant desire for a flight East (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

hope

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'expectant desire' is the definition.
'hope' can be an answer for 'desire' (I've seen this before). I'm unsure of the 'expectant' bit.

'flight east' is the wordplay.
'flight' becomes 'hop' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'east' becomes 'e' (abbreviation).
'hop'+'e'='HOPE'

'for a' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for hope that I've seen before include "One who wrote about prisoner" , "combination of expectation and desire" , "Bob --, US comedian" , "The last thing in Pandora's Box" , "It alone stayed in Pandora's box" .)
