Crossword Genius

Fabric twisted away in attack (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

chiffon

'fabric' is the definition.
(I know that chiffon is a type of fabric)

'twisted away in attack' is the wordplay.
'twisted' says the letters should be written in reverse.
'away' becomes 'off' (synonyms).
'in' is an insertion indicator.
'attack' becomes 'chin' (to hit someone on the chin).
'off' written backwards gives 'ffo'.
'ffo' going into 'chin' is 'CHIFFON'.

(Other definitions for chiffon that I've seen before include "Thin light fabric" , "Fine material" , "Light silk/nylon fabric" , "Sheer silk or rayon fabric" , "Fine (semi)transparent fabric" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
