Fault in a drilling platform cropping up (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

arising

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'cropping up' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are present participle verbs, I don't see how they can define each other.

'fault in a drilling platform' is the wordplay.
'fault' becomes 'sin' (I've seen this in another clue).
'in' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'drilling platform' becomes 'rig' (I've seen this in another clue).
'a'+'rig'='arig'
'sin' placed inside 'arig' is 'ARISING'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for arising that I've seen before include "becoming manifest" , "on the horizon" , "Coming up for discussion" , "Stemming from like committee matters, or getting up" , "occurring" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
