Crossword Genius

Favour quiet mention (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

prefer

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This clue could be a double definition.

'favour' is the first definition.
(I know that favour can be written as prefer)

'quiet mention' is the second definition.
Although both the answer and definition are verbs in their base form, I cannot see how they can define each other.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for prefer that I've seen before include "as one may with charges" , "Choose over others" , "Choose as more desirable, like better" , "Like (something) better than another" , "Value more highly" .)

I've seen this clue in The Daily Express.
