Figure broken seats to have been made with matchwood! (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

vestas

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'matchwood' is the definition.

'figure broken seats to have been' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
an anagram of 'seats' is 'estas' which is located in the answer.
A single letter 'v' remains which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'made with' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for vestas that I've seen is " Matches - staves (anag)".)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
