Crossword Genius

Figures to an extent raised (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

data

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'figures' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'an extent raised' is the wordplay.
'an' becomes 'a'.
'extent' becomes 'tad' (I can't explain this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'raised' says the letters should be written in reverse (going up in a down clue).
'a'+'tad'='atad'
'atad' in reverse letter order is 'DATA'.

'to' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for data that I've seen before include "What's stored by computers" , "Numerical information" , "Computer info" , "Facts and figures as processed by computer" , "Collection of bits of information" .)

I've seen this clue in The Sun.
