Crossword Genius

Flush Republicans at the centre of cricket team scandal (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

irrigate

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'flush' is the definition.
(I know this)

'republicans at the centre of cricket team scandal' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'republicans' could be 'rr' (two abbreviations for Republican) and 'rr' is found in the answer.
'at' is found in the answer.
'team' could be 'ii' and 'ii' is present in the remaining letters.
The remaining letters 'ge' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for irrigate that I've seen before include "Supply water to land to help growth" , "Spray" , "Water land by means of ditches etc" , "Water soil to make it more fertile" , "Supply land with water to make fertile" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
