Crossword Genius

Food and wine one leaves in distant lands (3,4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

far east

'distant lands' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'food and wine one leaves' is the wordplay.
'food' becomes 'fare' (fare is a kind of food).
'and' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'wine' becomes 'asti' (Italian wine).
'one' becomes 'I' (Roman numeral).
'leaves' indicates named letters should be taken away.
'asti' with 'i' removed is 'ast'.
'fare'+'ast'='FAR EAST'

'in' is the link.

(Other definitions for far east that I've seen before include "China, Korea, Japan, etc" , "distant lands" , "The Orient" , "Region containing Japan" , "remotest Siberia, perhaps" .)

I've seen this clue in The Sun.
