Crossword Genius

For the final position to be held, call in the army (4,4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

last post

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'call in the army' is the definition.
'last post' can be an answer for 'call' (I've seen this before). I'm not certain of the 'in the army' bit.

'for the final position to be held' is the wordplay.
'for' becomes 'last' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'the' becomes 't' (the is pronounced as a 't' sound in some dialects).
'final' says to put letters next to each other.
'position' becomes 'pos' (abbreviation).
'to be held' is an insertion indicator.
'last'+'t'='lastt'
'lastt' going around 'pos' is 'LAST POST'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for last post that I've seen before include "Farewell bugle call" , "Military bugle call sounded at sunset" , "Correspondent may not want to miss this" , "Evening collection" , "Army bugle call at sunset and funerals" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
