I believe the answer is:

strange

'saint sounded english' is the wordplay.
'saint' becomes 'st' (abbreviation).
'sounded' becomes 'rang' (ringing is a kind of sounding).
'english' becomes 'E' (abbreviation as in OED).
'st'+'rang'+'e'='STRANGE'
