Crossword Genius

Foxy sweetheart rejected hunger (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

vulpine

'foxy' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'sweetheart rejected hunger' is the wordplay.
'sweetheart' becomes 'luv' (both are terms of endearment).
'rejected' says the letters should be written backwards.
'hunger' becomes 'pine' (I've seen this in another clue).
'luv' back-to-front is 'vul'.
'vul'+'pine'='VULPINE'

(Other definitions for vulpine that I've seen before include "Cunning as a fox - liven up (anag)" , "like Basil Brush?" , "Like a fox -- liven up (anag)" , "Resembling a fox" , "Characteristic of a fox" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
