Crossword Genius

Frame splenetic review of history play (4,4,2,5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

look back in anger

'play' is the definition.
(play by John Osborne)

'frame splenetic review of history' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'review' could be 'lookback' (synonyms) and 'lookback' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'inanger' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

(Other definitions for look back in anger that I've seen before include "one may retrospectively find outrageous?" , "Retrospective of passion" , "play" , "be ticked off in review?" , "drama!" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
