Crossword Genius

Gamble, having lost one's shirt? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

invest

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This could be a double definition.

'gamble' is the first definition.
The definition and answer can be both to do with social activities as well as being verbs in their base form.
Perhaps they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'lost one's shirt?' is the second definition.
Although both the answer and definition are verbs in their base form, I cannot see how they can define each other.

'having' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for invest that I've seen before include "Put money into business for profit" , "Lay out in expectation of profit" , "Put money into in hopes of a return" , "Put money or effort into" , "Eg, buy stocks and shares" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
