Crossword Genius

Gents, eg, fritter away funds (4,3)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

nest egg

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'away funds' is the definition.
'nest egg' can be an answer for 'funds' (thesaurus). I'm unsure of the 'away' bit.

'gents eg fritter' is the wordplay.
'fritter' indicates an anagram (I've seen 'fritters' mean this (I've seen this in other clues)).
'gents'+'eg'='gentseg'
'gentseg' anagrammed gives 'NEST-EGG'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for nest egg that I've seen before include "Saved-up money" , "A saving for the future - by bird?" , "Sum of money saved in avian manner" , "Is it to encourage laying" , "Sum of money put by as a reserve" .)

I've seen this clue in The Mirror.
