Get information from people on a food item (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

pumpkin

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'a food item' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot see how they can define each other.

'get information from people' is the wordplay.
'get information' becomes 'pump' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'from' says to put letters next to each other.
'people' becomes 'kin' (I've seen this in other clues).
'pump'+'kin'='PUMPKIN'

'on' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for pumpkin that I've seen before include "Large orange fruit of the squash family" , "Large variety of squash" , "big, yellow, and round" , "Large fruit with many seeds" , "Halloween vegetable" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
