Crossword Genius

Girl from the outback? (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

ninon

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'girl' is the definition.

'from the outback?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'from' could be 'in' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'in' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'non' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for ninon that I've seen before include "delicate material" , "Silk voile" , "Lightweight silk fabric" , "Dressmaker" , "Fine sheer fabric" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
