Crossword Genius

Go on about vegetable found by sea in in Calais (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

yammer

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'go on' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both to do with communicating as well as being verbs in their base form.
Maybe you can see an association between them that I can't see?

'vegetable found by sea in in calais' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'vegetable' could be 'yam' (yam is a kind of vegetable) and 'yam' is present in the answer.
'sea' could be 'mer' (I have seen 'French sea ' mean 'mer' so perhaps 'sea' could also mean 'mer') and 'mer' is located in the answer.
No letters remain.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'about' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for yammer that I've seen before include "Complain loudly and persistently" , "Talk loudly at length" , "complaint" , "Complain persistently or jabber" , "Loud and repetitive noise" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Times.
