Gold-covered true man without even fall (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

autumn

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'fall' is the definition.
(I know that fall can be written as autumn)

'gold-covered true man without even' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'gold' could be 'au' (Au is the chemical symbol for gold) and 'au' is found within the answer.
'man' could be 'n' (knight, a man in chess) and 'n' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'tum' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for autumn that I've seen before include "Season of falling leaves" , "Americans call it the fall" , "October's season" , "addressed by Keats" , "1 Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
