Crossword Genius

Golf club's whisky off-limits (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

edges

'limits' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'golf club's whisky off' is the wordplay.
'golf club's' becomes 'wedge's' (type of golf club).
'whisky' becomes 'W' (phonetic alphabet: alpha, bravo, charlie etc.).
'off' is a deletion indicator (some letters taken off).
'wedges' with 'w' removed is 'EDGES'.

(Other definitions for edges that I've seen before include "Sharpened sides of knives etc" , "Sharpened sides of blades" , "Outer limits" , "Margins" , "Borders, rims" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
