Crossword Genius

Great to have a change. It's stifling! (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

garotte

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'stifling' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't see how one could define the other.

'great to have a change it's' is the wordplay.
'great' becomes 'gt' (abbreviation used in place names).
'to have' is an insertion indicator.
'change' becomes 'rot' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'it' becomes 'e' ('e' can mean 'electronic' which is similar to 'IT').
'a'+'rot'='arot'
'gt' enclosing 'arot' is 'garott'.
'garott'+'e'='GAROTTE'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for garotte that I've seen before include "throttle" , "Facility to dispose of person" , "Spanish method of execution" , "Strangle" , "Kill by strangulation" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
