Guest who finishes the course? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

stayer

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'guest who finishes' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't understand how one could define the other.

'the course?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'the' could be 't' (the is pronounced as a 't' sound in some dialects) and 't' is found in the answer.
'course?' could be 's' and 's' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'ayer' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for stayer that I've seen before include "tenacious sort" , "one running over a long distance?" , "One with powers of endurance" , "Tenacious steed" , "Person with perseverance" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail and The Irish Independent.
