Crossword Genius

Haughty fellow with money (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

aloof

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'haughty' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'fellow with money' is the wordplay.
'fellow' becomes 'al' (I've seen this in other clues).
'with money' becomes 'oof' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'al'+'oof'='ALOOF'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for aloof that I've seen before include "Detached, distant" , "Showing detached attitude" , "Remote in manner" , "Socially detached" , "Distant or stuck-up" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
