Ross

I believe the answer is:

hues

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'shades' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'head of university wearing the chap's' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'university' could be 'u' (abbreviation for university) and 'u' is found within the answer.
'chap's' could be 'hes' and 'hes' is located in the remaining letters.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for hues that I've seen before include "Tones or shades" , "Colours" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
