Help to get through edit? (4,4)
I believe the answer is:
tide over
'edit?' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are verbs in their base form, I cannot understand how one could define the other.
'help to get through' is the wordplay.
'help' becomes 'tide' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'to get' says to put letters next to each other.
'through' becomes 'over' (I've seen this in another clue).
'tide'+'over'='TIDE OVER'
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for tide over that I've seen before include "bridge gap" , "Help (someone) through a difficult period" , "give temporary help" , "help in hard times" , "Support (someone through a bad patch)" .)
