Crossword Genius

High church features (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

steeples

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'church features' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'high' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'high' could be 'steep' (similar in meaning) and 'steep' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'les' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for steeples that I've seen before include "Jack can climb them" , "Lee steps up on churches" , "Towers with spires on church roofs" , "Tall towers tapering to a point" , "Tall church towers" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
