Crossword Genius

In a difficult situation, went round the bend! (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

cornered

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'went round the bend' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'in a difficult situation' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'situation' could be 'corner' (I have seen 'awkward situation' mean 'corner' so perhaps 'situation' could also mean 'corner') and 'corner' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'ed' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for cornered that I've seen before include "Caught in a difficult position" , "Monopolised the market" , "In an awkward position" , "Unable to escape" , "Having no way out" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
