Crossword Genius

In a northerly sense, we in Britain get its drift (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

atlantic

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'drift' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both natural objects as well as being singular nouns.
Perhaps there's a link between them I don't understand?

'in a northerly sense we in britain get its' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'a' could be 'an' and 'an' is located in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for atlantic that I've seen before include "main" , "Tilt a can at the ocean" , "Western ocean." , "Great sea" , "Sea between Old and New Worlds" .)
