I believe the answer is:

speedwell

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'the plant' is the definition.
The answer is an example.

'in a while the weed got entwined' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
an anagram of 'weed' is 'eedw' which is within the answer.
'while' could be 'spell' (I've seen this before) and 'spell' is found in the remaining letters.
No letters remain.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

'with' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for speedwell that I've seen before include "Flowering plant" , "bloomer?" , "Small plant, veronica" , "Small creeping herbaceous plant with blue or pink flowers" , "Small blue flower of the genus veronica" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
