Crossword Genius

Inactive little creature (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

pupa

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This might be a double definition.

'inactive little' is the first definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't understand how one could define the other.

'creature' is the second definition.
(pupa is a kind of creature)

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for pupa that I've seen before include "not yet adult" , "A chrysalis as of butterfly" , "Developing butterfly" , "creepy-crawly" , "Stage of an insect's development" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
