Interrupted silence on telephone with scoff (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

piecemeal

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'interrupted' is the definition.
Both the definition and answer are adjectives. Perhaps you can see a link between them that I can't see?

'silence on telephone with scoff' is the wordplay.
'silence' becomes 'peace' (I've seen this in another clue).
'on telephone' shows a homophone (sound like) (as it might sound on the phone).
'with' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other).
'scoff' becomes 'meal' (I've seen this before).
'peace' sounds like 'piece'.
'piece'+'meal'='PIECEMEAL'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for piecemeal that I've seen before include "Bit by bit; unsystematic" , "step by step" , "by degrees" , "Gradually, little by little" , "Claim epee in gradual unsystematic way" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
