energise

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'invigorate' is the definition.
(I know that energise is the is a more specific form of the action of invigorate.)

'republican soldiers in various directions' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'republican' could be 'r' (abbreviation in US politics) and 'r' is present in the answer.
'soldiers' could be 'gis' (GI is an informal term for a US soldier) and 'gis' is found within the answer.
'directions' could be 'ne' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'ne' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'ee' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

I've seen this clue in The Times.
