Invitation to carry fish and chips, perhaps (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

carpenter

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'chips perhaps' is the definition.
'carpenter' can be an answer for 'chips' (chips can informally refer to a carpenter). I am not certain of the 'perhaps' bit.

'invitation to carry fish' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'fish' could be 'carp' (carp is a kind of fish) and 'carp' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'enter' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'and' is the link.

(Other definitions for carpenter that I've seen before include "singer called Karen" , "Woodworker (Quince)" , "Find fault with record" , "Wood worker" , "job" .)

I've seen this clue in The Hindu.
