Crossword Genius

Is taken at mid-afternoon on certain days (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

rides

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'certain days' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are plural nouns, I can't see how one could define the other.

'is taken at mid-afternoon' is the wordplay.
'is taken' becomes 'ides' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should believe this answer much more).
'at' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other) (I've seen this in other clues).
'mid' says to take the centre.
The middle letter of 'afternoon' is 'r'.
'ides' put after 'r' is 'RIDES'.

'on' is the link.

(Other definitions for rides that I've seen before include "Theme park attractions" , "Dries up and travels" , "Trips" , "Theme park features" , "is carried" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
