Crossword Genius

Key void in piece of space-station (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

skylab

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'space-station' is the definition.
I can't tell whether this defines the answer.

'key void in piece' is the wordplay.
'void' suggests removing the centre (the word is empty or void of its inside letters).
'in' is an insertion indicator.
'piece' becomes 'slab' (I have seen 'Piece of paving' mean 'slab' so perhaps 'piece' could also mean 'slab').
'key' with its centre taken out is 'ky'.
'ky' going within 'slab' is 'SKYLAB'.

'of' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for skylab that I've seen before include "1970s' space station" , "1973-79 space station" , "research unit once in orbit" , "US space station launched in 1973" , "Nineteen seventies US space station" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
