Crossword Genius

Kill time, say, disheartened (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

eradicate

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'kill' is the definition.
(I know that eradicate is a kind of kill)

'time say disheartened' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'time' could be 'era' (an era is a period of time) and 'era' is found within the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for eradicate that I've seen before include "Extinguish, wipe out" , "Get rid of, remove all traces" , "Destroy completely" , "Dispose of" , "Stamp out, remove all traces of" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
